What would you do if...
you could learn all there is to know? The value of a university education can be measured in more than terms of
higher income potential and middle-class social standing.
It lies in the expansion of your horizons, in the explosion of your imagination,
and in the sharpening of your intellectual skills.
We all know that the world is changing at a rapid pace, and we need to have
the vision to see ahead to where we might want to go.
The road we are now on is not the road we will stay on, but how can we learn
what road to take in the future?
Only a broad-based liberal education can give us the knowledge and skills
to discern that path.
Next to a university education, wide travel and exposure to other lands, peoples
and cultures is essential.
Especially in Los Angeles, where all of the world's peoples have come together:
African, American, Asian, and European, the breadth and awareness created
by travel is necessary.
But one doesn't have to go on a world cruise, one can travel the world
right here in Los Angeles.
From Beijing to Mombasa, from Berlin to Mexico City, the cultures of the world
await us just a few minutes down the freeway.
you could see all there is to see?
you could master the tools of the Internet? There once was a time (the mid-1970s) when one was expected to know
how to type on an electric typewriter.
A decade later (the mid-1980s), one was expected to know
how to use a computer word processor.
Now (the late-1990s) one is expected to know
how to use the tools of the Internet:
e-mail, web page writing, and net researching.
University education in Los Angeles has taken on this challenge,
incorporating the skills of the Internet into a variety of venues and courses.
See the links below for one example of this new direction
in university education in Los Angeles.
